Lanark County Genealogical Society, a not-for-profit organization of family historians with patrons in Lanark County, across Canada, the USA and worldwide.

On March 27, 1981, twenty-four genealogy enthusiasts met near Smith's Falls, Ontario to discuss the formation of a local genealogy society. This group grew in scope and number to become the Lanark County Genealogical Society in 1982.

The mandate of the Lanark County Genealogical Society is to assist members in researching family histories and in the gathering, recording and preserving of genealogical information pertaining to Lanark County.

Our membership has grown over the years with members in Canada, United States, Great Britain and Australia.

LCGS is an independent group, yet maintains close ties with the Kingston, Ottawa and Leeds & Grenville branches of the Ontario Genealogical Society.

Genealogical Library:

LCGS' Genealogical Library is Located at the Heritage House Museum 11 Old Sly's Road, Smith Falls .

A varied and interesting genealogical resource materials, Family trees, Family Histories, Scrapbooks & publications illustrating local history and community events.

The Library operated on a self help basis with a Librarian on site at various times.

A $2.00 Researcher Pass will be required ( good for 1 year from date of issue) to access the genealogical section located in the basement.

Hours of Operation:

  • May to late December -- daily from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • January to late April -- Weekdays only from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Archives:

with the archival depository, accessible to the general public, for all genealogical and historical documents pertaining to Lanark County. Each year many patrons visit the Archives such as local historians, school children, church groups and family members looking for long lost relatives come from all over Canada, the USA and as far away as Europe.

This concept was developed after the Province of Ontario accepted a proposal from the Lanark County GenealogicalSociety to preserve the Land Records for posterity.

Resource Materials Available

The Lanark County Land Registry Abstract Books and Land Deeds dating from 1868 to 1955.

Listings for local cemeteries, census records, early church records of baptisms and marriages.

Scrap-books of births, deaths and marriages gleaned from local newspapers.

Compiled alphabetically, they complement the published indexes of the Almonte Gazette, Lanark Era and Perth Courier which cover the earlier years up to the 1930's
